Default Maybe the time has come to get a VW Camper Van - would like help in deciding.

Me and the missus have been talking about selling the Stag and purchasing a VW camper.

In honesty, I have always liked them, but recently the draw towards owning one has increased.

The only question is, how do I decide which type to go for? I absolutely love the looks of the older splitty, but wonder how practical they are and how much power is available for cruising (ie not a lot) which would make it not very drivable. The T2 has better facilities, is more practical and has lots more power, just lacks some of the exterior appeal.

So, does anyone own one and can give advice, or know of a place to gain this info? Ideally, I would like to look round a few and get a feel for the varying types out there. eg Devon, Westfalia, etc etc.

Maybe a trip to a V dub show would be a good idea to look round some various models.....

Any info would be gratefully received, a buying guide would also be great.

    as Gary said,

you can buy brand new ones. I saw an 08 reg one on the motor way other day. It's a little different on the outside if you know what your looking at but all in all it's a very good modern day substitute copy

Shouldn't be a huge problem for me I hope, as I'm fairly handy there.

Thanks for the link Gary, but I definitely do not want a modern water cooled one. It's air cooled all the way. I want to keep the genuine retro feel and character.

My heart is telling me Splitty, But my head is saying Bay for the practicality and also running / buying costs. (my head usually wins these debates)

Been having a nose around and think that the only real option for a 4 berth is going to be the Bay. Maybe an awning would be a good idea too. I am even considering doing a custom interior to suit our exact needs. Full width rock and roll bed seems like a must for me, and also 2 other beds would need slotting in for the kids, so would need a pop top ( I really don't like the high tops and an increased fixed height may be problematic). Looking at one maybe over the cab area that can be removed and stored in the back for when not parked up. Or something like a bunk above the lower bed - need to get out there and look at some options in the flesh. I'm getting quite excited now..... even though it will be a while off yet.
