    Default 4th year vx warranty

Just had the EGR valve (Signum CDTI 150) changed today by VX about two months outside three year warranty. They say they'll make a 50% contribution (haven't got the bill yet). Is this normal or am I "lucky"? The EGR which has just come off is dated April 2007, so it's younger than the car. Do parts fitted under warranty come with their own warranty or does that expire with the car's warranty?

How often am I going to need EGR valves?

I actually followed the excellent 'How to' to clean it up to see me through last weekend. I wanted to keep it as a spare but they said it would have to go back to Vauxhall. How many of these things do they have to look at before they've seen enough? I can tell them what the problem is like lots of you on here I'm sure - high tech electronics mated to poor quality electro-mechanical ancillaries. The solenoid pistons were all pitted and seized. They need to be made of much better stuff.

I'm looking at the dreaded swirl valve setup now although no problems yet - can see at a glance that it 's not made to last either. Oh well - rant over for now.

I had my EGR valve replaced under warranty (2nd time) about 3 months ago and my car will be 3 yrs old at end of June this year.

I asked if the replacement part came with a 12mth warranty but they said not. The warranty for the car is 3 yrs after that it is not covered regardless of when any replacement parts have been fitted.

Didn't sound right to me and have been meaning to contact Vaux to get a proper answer but not got round to it yet.

When I had the VW, any part fitted in the last 12 months was only covered til the last day of the warranty and it was in all the paperwork.

I would imagine VX is just the same. I'd hazard a guess that its to do with keeping the admin side of things easy and neat.

Ask when the work is done
Typically OEM parts are 12 months, with either 1 or 3 months labour

You can ask for ANY removed parts to be returned to you, except EXCHANGE (such alternator, air con pump, and so on)
If you do want the parts back, then supply a box lined to prevent any fluid leaks, and ask for them to be placed in that

If you get the part changed for free under the 3 year warranty then the new parts warranty only lasts until the 3 years is up on the car.
If you pay for any part then you should get 12 months warranty with it.

thats exactly right, as its a warranty part you have no right to a further warranty on that part, and if they are going 50/50 on the part then you dont have any right to the old part im afraid....this is the same on anything you purchase, other wise you could just keep taking an item back every 11mths and saying its faulty and never have to buy another one! although some retail companies do give a brand new 12mth warranty on some items....

I've had parts replaced during and towards the end of a warranty...

Parts failing during a warranty are then only covered for 12 months
If they fail again, and it is outside the 12 months, then you need to pay
On the plus side once the warranty has expired, those items are still covered
I've had this happen a few times; once for a bootlock which failed three times, and once for a crankshaft sensor

I'm afraid thats not true.As i stated before,in law, your only covered up to the 3 years maximum even though you may have had a new engine 6 months before the warranty expired, the new engine is only warrentied until the 3 years are up.
If anyone has had stuff replaced after the 3 years is up then its because the manufacturer has given you good will towards it.It is not your right to have it repaired.
Most manufacturers will continue to pay out for the car after its warranty has expired depending on the mileage, service records, age of car(ie only 2 months out of warranty) and also how good your main dealer is with dealing with complaints.

But,i must reitterate, its not legally liable to do so after the 3 years.
