    Default Veccy 1.8 Oil?

I have a very minor oil leak which appears to be coming from the driveshaft. It's just a drop overnight but when the engine gets hot, proper hot after an enthusiastic drive then a little more leaks.

I had to pop in the "wrong" oil - Castrol GTX 10/40 as it was the only one at the service station when the light came on. This hasn't leaked out now so I imagine the 5/30 longlife which I put in is thin enough to leak and the 10/40 doesn't get quite as thin.

If I changed the oil more reguarly, can I use 10/40 to prevent leaks?

Thing is it sounds like gearbox oil, if it is leaking from a driveshaft. The gearbox in seperate from the engine as regards to the oil. Could it be running along somewhere and inturn dripping off the driveshaft. If so I would look to see if the oil is leaking from either the head gasket or the camcover, look at the rear of the engine too and the sump gasket. As to putting whatever oil in the engine should not affect the gearbox.

Gearbox was my first thought as well - but I'm losing engine oil evidenced by me having to top it up so reguarly!

If the car is out of warranty, then you may want to increase the frequency of oil and filter changes, and by doing this you can then convert from using 5W30 oil to any other

I also plan to do this when my warranty expires in November, taking me from 30K mile intervals to 10K miles
I could reduce the oil specification, but the cost is about the same so I am not bothering
