    confused Glovebox cable mystery!

    Hi All,

Not sure if it comes as standard on all models, but the glovebox door / hatch on my pre-facelift SRi has an elastic cable type thing attached to it to stop it from dropping too fast when opened. I opened the glovebox today and with a lovely BANG the cable popped off and slipped into the void behind the dash.

I've taken the entire glovebox out and had a good look around but I can't find the cable or where it's fixed to, I would have thought it would be attached right behind the glovebox or that there'd be some sort of reel mechanism but no joy so far.

Any ideas? I've attached a couple of photos in case anyone knows off the top of their head! As far as I remember the cable threads through the rectangular opening on the right.

    Cheers,

    Hutch

Don't know about a cable. My glove box is softly damped to stop it crashing down with a thump.

@ kenp, thanks for the suggestion. It was a black cable attached directly to the glove box, none of the wiring cables behind the glove box are long enough to get caught or wrapped around.

@ john, how is yours damped? The cable was effectively a damping mechanism, right now if I unlatch the glove box it just crashes down as far as the hinge will allow not the end of the world, but annoying nonetheless!

Sounds like you have a broken glove box that someone has made a temp fix.

are you sure you had the cable?
i know that i pushed my glove box too hard once as i wanted it to open faster and i heard something cracked ..

when i took it out i noticed that there is some sort of shock absorber (black, made of plastic, barrel shaped, about 4inch long) which was doing the job and it broke..
    there was no cable

    Hi
I fixed the damper on mine, I was a bit impatient one day and forced the glove box down and somthing went pop. Discovered that the piston inside the black cylinder/damper on the right side of the glove box, had come unclipped from the ram.. had to take the cylinder apart and re-clip the piston to the ram, pluss a little grease to make it easier,, works fine now

    Thanks
    Pete

I think the stretchy cable thing fitted to yours is a bit of a home made 'fix'. The damper on the back is a little weak. Mine's been broken for ages and ages and will stay broken, as I really can't be bothered repairing it as it doesn't affect usage,
