    Default clutch prob help urgent

i was driving to work today and i heard a ping noise from the clutch, thought nothing of it as the clutch worked as advertised, but felt like there was no opposing force when i pushed down on the clutch. when i got to work i found a small part on the carpet see below
i took the car to a local garage and they reckoned it was an alignment spring, not an overly big job but still gonna cost at least 150 - 200
phoned local vx dealer, they were convinced it was the clutch return spring, i told them that the clutch was working as it should but i had less resistance when pushing it in, but they were convinced it was clutch return spring, and it was £400
so any one know what it is, ive felt the clutch spring and it is intact at both ends and works, i need to do a long journey on friday and i need the car, will it last till the end of the month... i dont know plz help

not 100% on that but i wouldn't have thought it would have anything to do with the clutch itself, more likely the gubbins on the upperpart of the pedal, get in with a torch take the piece with you and have a little look to see where it came from, and then get onto a local scrap yard, for something so small they wouldnt charge through the roof jus dont seem to desperate, but i certainly think its just a pedal spring the only thing that bumps up the cost is the labour, be careful tho it may still work but if it isnt disengaged correctly you'll be lookin 4 a new clutch sooner than you think, just take it to a vx dealer an ask thm to look in the footwell shouldnt cost anything - let me know how u get on.

early vec c had a problem with clutch springs breaking we used to change the pedal box that is why it is a dear job ..they modded the cars with a small shocker /spring on the rear off the pedal...this modded part is in the pick above so i wouldnt worry looks like the spring didnt break but it has been modded now the old type spring has broke you will have a light pedal wich is normal for a vec c aslong as it works and dont slip dont worry

thx for the replies, so what we are saying in non mechanical terms(im an aircraft avionics engineer), is that the clutches were modified with this part as they were breaking, so clutch will be ok, but wont it break eventually hense the mod?

and has the clutch spring been moded

the clutch pedal springs used to break so they fitted a modded shock type spring to the pedal yours has been modded ..and the old spring has broken strange it has taken this long useally first few thousand miles.....you have nothing to worry about ...

took the piece to a differant vx garage than mentioned above, they too didnt seem overly concerned and said that the clutch will work just fine, not that i doubted what you said benny, the wife wanted reassurance

now turns vx has had a uturn, they phoned me up and said that as long as i felt it was ok then keep on using it, but to replace that small clip means a clutch pedal box replacement which is £704, but it will fail eventually

for a ****ing clip i said!!!!!!!, turns out they dont do this part separatly.....

time to get rid i feel, unless i can get some definative answer from vx....which i doubt
as much as i want to be positive and hope what benny has said is correct it will nag me
as much as i liked this car i have this had since the warrenty ran out

2 x computers behind steering coloumn
1 broken rear spring (had to replace both)
    1 new driveshaft
    new boot mechanism
    radiator mountings
1 rear seat belt( the middle one, was never used and then when we came to use it, it was ****ed)
all of the above was b4 40,000 miles and there is ony 60k on it now

so i think its bye bye 2.2 2002 vectra c and hello anything else i can find
