Allways place your car on axle stands, correctly positioned and on solid ground, and another tip is to place your wheels under the side skirt area after removing them, that way if the worst did happen the car would drop onto the wheels giving you some breathing space, after having said all this,if you have the cash use a garage.

Must admit I am a little concerned even with axle stands when I'm under, good tip with the wheel. I will do that when I'm painting my calipers next week

I have had a first hand experience with someone being crushed by his car,it was my best friend !,
We both worked at the same place I was coming in through the gates and saw that Rodger was working under his car, when I parked up along side him I noticed that the car had slipped back off the car jack pinning him underneath,I quickly shouted for help at the same time lifting the car up by my self, god knows where I got the strength from ! we pulled him out but his face had gone blue ,the ambulance took him away and we later heard that he was dead on arrival.[he had two children under 5 years]
Now the strange thing about this is I was only talking about this on Sunday to another friend who also knew him very well as to when it happened, not easily forgotten 36 years ago last week !,the day I took of work to attend his funeral my wife gave birth to our son thats how I never forget about Rodger. And when I see anybody working under a car with only a car jack for support it sends shivers up my spine and I always stop and point out what could happen.
Rodger should have known better as he was ex army [REME] and also a member of the service crew for my rally car,he no doubt thought the work he was going to do would only take a minute or so and it would be ok.
    Apologies for the long reply.
