    Smile 1.8XE manual gearbox trouble, adjustable cables?

    Hi, does any body know if the cables are adjustable on my 55 plate facelift 1.8XE sri.

    Im mid repairing it and after going for a short very slow drive(track control arm is bent) and it wants to jump out of 2nd all the time.I only got as far as 3rd gear but 1st 3rd and reverse al seem fine so im guessing 4th will behave like 2nd.

    Feels as if its half way into second if you get me and not fully selected!

    Had a look and play about with the two cables with the plastic bushes which slide in and out of the mounting but it all looks fine and certainly nothing obvious bent from the accident impact.They dont look easily adjustable to me or even at all

    And also ive had a really good look over the box but cant see any id numbers ie F10 or whatever.Does any body know which box code mine will be?

    is the control arm bent enough to pull the driveshaft out slightly ??

    Maybe yeah, the wheel is turned prob 3-4 inches to the left when the drivers side sits straight ahead......could this be causing the trouble, i bought a new ball joint and steering rack extension today, not fitted yet though.

    From what I rem on my 06 1.8 when I changed my linkage the adjustment was made from inside.
    I take it you are looking under the gear gaitor and not under the bonnet?
    I set mine by having the box in neutral and the stick in the same
    The cables can then be clipped into position on a ratchet mech
    Mine worked fine so maybe I just got lucky

    All my messing has been done under the bonnet. never really give it a thought to look in the gear stick area inside!. You could be on to something though!

    Best pics I got but you can just see the 2 white clips under the gear lever that lock the cable "ends" (when set) into place



    And no you don't have to strip the car that far either

    cool, thanks for the pic gives a good idea of whats going on behind all that plastic. Will have a look in this area when i have fitted the new control arm and ball joint in case its this causing the trouble.

    Any body have a clue what gerbox code it will be? just curious so i can weigh up how much a replacement would be. (just in case).

    I managed to track down the supplying dealer and they sent me a run down of the service history and apparently it had a replacement gearbox at 25000 miles and a clutch at 30000!. Are these gearboxes prone to failure?

    Guess F17 and yes they are going wrong already
    Gm cant sort a box to save their life !
    Just look at their previous efforts
    Cav F13, Vectra B F18 box and now Vectra F40 chocco box lol
