Unhappy Help!! - Oil filter removal on a Corsa C

Not Vec/Signum related I know (hence the general chat section).

Doing an oil and filter change on Mrs Duncan's Corsa (SRi) and I'm bu**ered if I can get the oil filter off!! I've tried using one of those oil filter strap things that I've got, but I just can't get any purchase - not helped by where it's situated in the engine bay.

Has anyone replaced a filter on a Corsa C? Any great words of wisdom?

Stick a screwdriver through the wall of the filter and turn. Messy but effective

Don't I need to keep that part intact? It's an element oil filter - I'm only replacing the inside bit.

Try wrapping some abrasive sheet [glass paper] round the oil filter then put the strap back on that might help to grip the filter, or a s MLC says bodge a screwdriver through, but you will be in the 5hit if it does not come off then.

This is the oil filter remover I use it will get most filters off the tighter the oil filter the tighter the claw thig grips, it is a brilliant idea.

Just looked on our lasses 1.2 Litre 16v engine and just to right of the oil fillter cap is the oil housing. Big socket (looks like 24mm) and spin it off.

But yours is the 1.8 being the SRi right? So could be different.

Is it a standard looking filter like this:

Thanks guys. I've just realised the muppet in the parts dept (think he was new) has given me the wrong filter!!! He's given me an element type filter for a different engine, not the all-in-one style for the 1.4 in this car. Aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!

The dealer is now shut, Halfords shuts in three minutes, the Corsa is on axle stands on the drive, the Vec inside the garage so I'm screwed basically!!!

I'll have to get the right one from Halfords tomorrow!

Edit: Just seen your post. Yep, that's what's on this one, but I've been given the wrong replacement. Once I get the new one tomorrow I can use MLC's 'method'! lol

could you get a chisel or an old screwdriver and try tapping it undone, see the "chrome " edge at the hole end, try putting the chisel just off center [ie if vertical is 12 o,clock] then put it at 1 oclock if you hit it hard enough it might just loosen it enough to put the strap wrench on and use that to undo it.
