    Angry Broken locking nut key

I got home early today, so wanted to get my wheels off to give them a proper clean. First wheel, and the bolts are FT, but I get them undone. Cleaned the wheel (pleased with the result too!). Go to put the wheel back, got the torque wrench out and as I'm tightening the locking nut with the key I hear a noise I really didn't want to hear

The locking key has broken - the 'key' pattern has completely sheered from the actual key socket.

What really annoys me is that this is a relatively new locking key and bolt which I brought last September (after I lost the key for the first set I had - doh!) so i'm off to the dealer tomorrow to see what they can do for me.

TBH I want to be shot of them after various scare stories on here, so I may just get the dealer to remove them and then I'll look into some decent aftermarket ones (any recommendations, prices? links?). Problem is I can't find my receipt (only my bank statement entry after using the debit card).

If the dealer can't help I may post up a request to borrow a key if someone local has the key number i need.

Damn these cheap Vx locking nuts and keys

Gonna wait to see what the dealer can do for me, then post a request up if they can't/won't help. But I'm sure they will help - when I lost the original key last year, they removed the old ones for free and sold me the new set - some people have been charged by their dealer to remove the old set.

Ah - thats not so good when you have actual work to do - I was just cleaning. The only problem I have now is one shiny wheel and 3 dull wheels!

Reasonable result at Vauxhall this morning. There was only one (busy) mechanic in so they wanted me to book the car in (and pay!). However they let me borrow their master set and I got out 3 of bolts easily.

The one which caused the key to break yesterday, was slightly rounded off, but enough to cause the key to slip when trying to undo it. No choice but to book the car in for next Saturday to have the single failed bolt drilled out (at cost)

Top marks to the dealer (Picador Winchester) though - they have replaced the locking wheel bolts with another set FoC. Not sure if I'll use them though! I might use them - but replace with ordinary bolts when the car goes to the garage.

I suspect the 'problem' wheel had been seriously over-tightened previously (most likely by windy gun) causing damage to the bolt and possibly the key. My attempt to undo the bolt proved to be the final straw - and it failed catastrophically when torquing the wheel back up.

Since the new bolts were put on in September, the car has only been to a local garage for an MOT, and another Vx dealer. And this is the first time I have removed the wheels myself

My Locking nut did the same, but i didnt get the nut drilled.

You need an independant with an 18mm titanium socket set, to get them off.

Local bloke near me did my front two for £20, where as drilling was £60 per corner

i had this with a vectra b pal.
i rang the AA and the bloke just hammered on a titanium socket and it came straight off, 2 min job.
he told me thats all car theives do, so more trouble than they're worth.

i still have locking nuts though.

lockng wheel nuts are only to be done up tight, not forced!!!! using a torque wrench sounds bad!! just tighten up and a small nip! the other 3 bolts hold the wheel on!!

hate those mcguards. had to have one removed a few months back, this involved cutting a socket apart, welding it to the bolt through the aperture then remove bolt. result one damaged wheel.

all other attempt using the specialist tools had failed!!

use a different type now. cant remember the name but carry a £20k guranteee. much better constrcution.
