Unhappy Car wont Start - no fuel? Please Help

    Got a 1997 Vectra Estate 2l diesel

Had some trouble some time ago and changed the crank sensor and spill lines and the thing started up and ran again

Since that time I noticed that, from cold it took a lot more turning over to get it going - when it was hot it was back to its old self and started first pull

Had a problem when it woulnt start a month or so ago, but left it overnight, charged the battery and it started after a while

Now things have got serious (recovery vehicle serious) I have been all day trying everything to start the thing opened one of the injector lines and not much was coming out - in case there was a blockage changed the fuel filter (filled it up with fuel to reduce the bleed time) turned it over, it tried to start - so I bunged a bit of ether in and after turing over it ran!

so joy of joys got changed to go out and ---- you have guessed it when I Came out again and it would not start - Thought it was air so nearly flatted the battery but no joy

Got changed into my overalls again - no leaks as I could detect but when I took the input line to the fuel filter out nothing came out as I turned the engine over.

Now my question is where does that line go and what pumps the fuel through? could it be blocked? Does it come from the fuel tank?

    Any ideas appreciated

them older diesel engine have the fuel sucked through via the diesel pump, so every time your cranking it over without fuel running through it its not being lubricated properly and can lead to premature pump failure. Good luck with the fixing of it.

Suggest in order check spill lines, (replace t-pieces if you already havent), get a garage to check the injector seals via a mityvac gauge. failing that i'm not sure.

Thanks very much for your suggestions

Replaced spill lines not so long ago (not plastic tee pieces tho)

Think injector seals must be OK cos when its running it sounds great and is not missing at all

The pump thing worries me - if I fill up the input line with diesel will it prime it again? To take the pump off is a massive job according to the Haynes manual ooooo dear£££

Will check them again - but would air getting into the spill lines at the head mean that I would get no input fuel at the filter?

Thought they were just overspill sent back to the pump to lubricate it and then back to the tank - or have I got the wrong idea

Am stuck not just dont know what to do can anyone help?????

    Unhappy

    UPDATE......

Bought a bleeding tool that someone suggested - its basically a rubber bulb with 2 none return valves in it - the idea is that as you press the bulb the fuel is pushed one way and so the system is bled

What a waste of money - it has not helped at all

I put it in the return line (see photo)

Tried cracking the nuts under the spill pipes and venting it whilst turning the engine and then tightening them up but this made no difference - with it being a piston pump not sure if this should blow out or if I was sucking more air in

Cranked engine all day ( went through 2 batteries) no joy

Tried start with ether and WD40 - it turned over until they ran you but made no attempt to start under its own steam

Took the rocker box off and tightened the injector attachments as someone suggested this may be it - no change

If anyone else has any ideas I would be most greatful as I am just about at the end of my teather (4 days I have been trying) - I just feel like ringing up the local scrap yard to come and collect it and going on the bus!

    Pete
