Default How can i get the gearknob off without damaging it??

The gearknob in my Dad's Elite has somehow come loose slightly, and thus moves a couple of mil everytime pressure is put on it, with a click sound, which is becoming verrry annoying.

It's deffinately just the actual knob itself as ive had a look to make sure it wasnt the actual stick or reverse selector moving somehow, and i also prized the chrome 'gate' from the knob to see if i could get the knob off that way, but seems not.

All i want to do is remove it, glue it and shove it back on, hopefully stopping it moving as its doing, so in no way do i want to hammer or cut it off...and i have looked through the other knob related threads and couldnt find any help relating to this problem

Any help and advice for this hugely appreciated as ever

When I chenged my stick for an Astra one, I had to swap the gaitors over and this meant removing the actual knob from the stick of my old one. I needed a hammer and a lot of effort with it removed from the car and totally trashed it before it came flying off, it's held on that tightly just because it's a such a tight fit...

My advice, if you want to do it properly without damage, is to get a whole new stick mechanism and change it (takes about ten minutes to do...)

My Astra one cost me a quid off eBay, so it's just a case of searching round...

    What year/engine is it...?

Its a 2002 1.8.....i dont think he'll want to be chaging the whole stick itself though.

    Think ive sorted this now

I tried smacking it with a hammer, (bit of timber ontop of gearknob and hit that) and it did work for a short while, than it started 'clicking' again.

So today i thought i'd have another look at it...and as luck would have it, as the car was like an oven inside, i gave the knob a good tug (Cue for a joke) and it came off in my hand (punchline?).....and cleaned the splined shaft up and applied some glue, and whacked the knob back on...and touch wood its all solid now

My knob clicks as well (now stop it with the jokes you lot!) and it does it more when changing up the box, like from 2nd to 3rd and only when the car is hot from being stood at work all day in the car park (in the hot weather earlier this week). When the interior is cool it stops clicking!
I'll think I will just live with it.
