Default Should Police Hide Speed Camera's ?

Do members think that Police should hide Speed camera's when checking the speed of potential speeding motorists. ??

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ding-sign.html

I personally think they should, anything thats stops drivers breaking the speed limit should be encouraged. Warning drivers that there are speed camera's in the area or ensuring camera's are in full view defeats the object of the exercise.

Yes I know they are supposed to be alleged deterents to promote road safety rather than catch drivers. Other countries such as France allow their bobbies to hide in hedgerows with camera's... so why not here.

I happen to know this stretch of road shown in the picture as I used to live quite close to it... ie. leads down towards Lostock Hall, Near Preston.

No it doesn't. The aim of the speed camera is to slow people down, not to catch those that speed??? Or is that whole ethos incorrect?

The bigger question is are they in the right places?????

That pic is a disgrace of a position. IMO

Is the UK road safety record still better than that of France?

I know in the last two-three years we've fallen behind one or two European countries since we used to be "top dog" (as in previous decades) - whether or not this correlates with the rise of the reliance on cameras and the fall in the numbers of road policing unit officers, I'll leave to your imagination.

The problem is... once clear of the speed camera, many motorists then speed up again many exceeding the legal limit again, so yes it does slow them down where the camera's are located. I suppose its all down to whether one breaks the law or abides by it.

They could well be in the wrong places, putting them where they are less visible would be much better.

Re. The pic. Only drivers who are breaking the law have anything to fear.

In regards to that pic, the road you would be coming down is quite a steep hill, so most people (come on, who down a steep hill is braking to make sure they doing 30mph) would be going over the limit anyway - then with the van hiding is quite a good revenue machine - especially as 150 yards past the van is a Gatso !!!!

I am all for speed camera's - but I agree with the above, I think they should concentrate on location of them, rather than wether or not they should be hidden.

Well both I and my wife do, and I'm sure many other law abiding drivers do too. Though I mostly use the gearbox to slow me down a bit, just dabbing the brakes if necessary in order to keep my speed within the legal limit.
