    Default Front strut replacement

After following the extremely well written 'How 2' on how to remove the front coil springs, by jamesworts (thanks James ), I've come across a problem and need some advice.

The removal of the spring/strut as a unit is easy peasy and I was well on the way to thinking I'd get the job done in an hour. However, when it came to removing the spring from the strut assembly....that was a different matter.

I compressed the spring no bother so it was loose within the strut housing, then realised that I didn't have a swan neck spanner to remove the nut at the top. If you've done this job you'll know that you have to hold the torx at the top whilst turning the nut.....Even the mole grips round the shaft didn't work, the nut is absoultely solid the shaft just slipped round with the force.

After a trip to the brother-in-laws, Halfords and B&Q....still no joy. (Thats my fault for starting a job on a Sunday)

Anyway, my question is this... Other than the 'Draper Vortex' kits I've seen, does anyone know if you can buy single sockets that are hexagonal on the outside rather than circular, with a half inch square drive? My old man has an Irwin set of sockets that have this but they only go up to 19mm.

If so, I could put the socket over the nut and then put the torx socket down the middle. Then I would just use a spanner on the outside of the socket. Seeeemples....

    Anyone help?

I used my air compresser gun to slacken the top bolt before removing from the car. The weight of the car/speed of the gun/pressure of the spring help to stop the piston turning. When the springs were changed i tightened them up on the car again with the gun. Been about 1500 miles and still f tight

Thanks for the reply. So you think that if I just use a normal 21mm socket over the nut, whilst its attached to the car, that should loosen it? Then once its broken, removen the assembly and the mole grip method around the shaft would work?
