unplug the rear light units and swap em over on the connectors will rule out if its a wiring issue or resistance on the circuit board to the supply

they still come out -remove the COMPLETE lamp assembly - and then plug it in on the opposite side they dont need to be fixed into place to try but it would rule out the matter of resistance on one of the PCB's

it sounds like it is a resistance issue, but as it was in both light units i would say its in the connector block that plugs into the back of the light cluster.
try spraying the plugs with WD40/GT85 or something similar and reconnect.

I have had the same problem on the estate always that same side.Is it related to how they use a single filiment bulb for both stop and tail. how does this work anyway?
