Dual Mass Flywheel
its a dual mass flywheel which is a 'damped' flywheel to absorb vibration in diesel engines, vibrate like hell when they go wrong
Stop dangerous Torque spikes - which cause excessive vibration - travelling through to the gearbox when starting the engine.

Thanks for the replies,im just trying to get clued up on these common faults since ive only had my car 5 wks so i no what to keep an eye on,

Take a look at this video, I know its VW but the same principals, look how its broke and what causes the vibration once its failed..
Probably, and also reduce strain on the starter as it won't be turning the gearbox components either.
Always did the clutch on start up... receommended in the manual as well.
