    It's basically a V shape spring.

The way they did it if i remember correctly, was to have the handbrake off, push down hard on the brake pedal for about 5 seconds, push the button in on the handbrake and it lifts right up so you have access to the spring.

Snowman, you got your ears on?

There is a noticeable difference after the handbrake mod. It is applied more firmly and feels more 'substantial'. Before the mod, if you let the brake 'slip' from the applied position it could drop straight down to the released position. Now it catches on the first 'ratchet' down every time. That's how I see it in my non-technical way. I suspect that there may be some instances of cack-handed modifications being carried out.

i know what you mean about the hanbrake mate i wish they had left mine well alone it makes all sorts of noises when pulled up and thats with the button depressed

Has anyone actually had their ratchet wear out by yanking on the handbrake without first pressing the button?

I'm beginning to think this is actually an urban myth.

vauxhall say you should never push the button in and pull the lever up as you cannot guarantee that the pawl has engaged and the lever can drop and the car rolling away

i always have and always will on all my cars/vans lift handbrake without button pushed as i think you can hear and tell that its pulled up enough, and correctly.

i saw the bbc watchdog thing on the vecs handbrake long before getting the car. took me a few weeks to train myself into just pulling up the handbrake instead of pressing the button but i have always left my cars in gear anyway.

I've had the mod done, makes no difference if you apply the hand brake properly in the first place, IMO.
