Default What causes Squeaky Brakes (Vec-B)

    Guy's,

What on earth causes squeaky brakes?

They are starting to do my head in as everytime I go near the pedal it sqeals and its annoying.

Pads and discs are all OK and I changed the rear pads about 4 months ago so its all copper greased up properly.

    Its very very !!

ANy tips on how I can stop it would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Bye bye Vec B

I think the copper grease can wear off sometimes so might need re-applied?

i take it your only talking about light braking??
if so the problem now comes from the matter of having no asbestos in the pads to lubricate them - so under light braking there is a resonance squeal of metal on metal - you could take your pads out and chamfer the edges this would give you a smaller surface area and the "stilletoe" effect would apply more pressure to a smaller surface area and this would help- the reason the noise comes on after a few weeks is because the pads are treated with a repellant to prevent premature wearing "for storage" you can reapply a similar product but it softens the pads and they wear quicker and when the "lube" dries up/is used the sqeal will return

lots of manufacturers are having similar problems these days

Yep, only under light brakeing. Thats quite an explanation, looks like I need to strip it down.

dirt can get behind the pads or between the pad face and the disc, i've had a small stone before imbedded in my pad. any dirt can cause the pad to be pressed to the disc uneven and under light braking, vibrate (squeel). hard braking the pad wont vibrate as it has too much pressure to hold it behind it. Just a quick strip down and clean methinks.
