Default VXR brakes now fitted (pics) and comparison to 314mm kit.

Following on from this thread, I've now got them all fitted on the car.

Without further ado, here's they are all fitted...

Here's the 345mm kit before it was fitted...

..and the 314mm kit once removed.

Here you can see the difference in the disc sizes...

..and the difference between the pads...

    345 pads

    314mm pads

Interestingly, the 345 calipers aro no physically bigger. In fact they are almost identical to the 314 calipers but with a few subtle differences (possibly other differences internally). The carriers are noticeably different - obviously to accommodate the larger discs.

Also, the pads are overall a very similar size, the 345 being a bit deeper (as in taller) but they have less actual pad surface touching the disc due to the tapered edges on the 345 pads. Obviously with the larger discs there is a greater force due to a greater fulcrum effect, and I'm not sure what specific/significant differences there are in the pad compounds. I hope that there is a marked difference in the power/bite of the kit (not that the 314s were lacking! lol). I'm sure looks are deceiving as on first glance there isn't (visually) a huge difference between them other than the disc size - which obviously itself will make a difference.

So, how do they compare to the 314s on the road? Well I can't say yet as they still need a good bit of bedding in and initially they don't have the bite of even the 314 kit that's just come off! The system is all nicely bled as the pedal is nice and firm, it's simply they need a decent bit of mileage on them to get them up to full strength - so I'll report back once that's done.

Nice Duncan but I believed the calipers were the same, but I do remember Mark had to adjust the pads to get them to fit.

The Police use them under 17" rims, so there should be a little room to spare...

Yes, exactly - the 345 pads need some reworking to fit into the 314 calipers just like Mark did. I wasn't expecting them to be bigger, it was more that it was interesting that they are no bigger - if you see what I mean.

Yep, realised I didn't take a pic of them once the wheels were back on. Will do one tomorrow and post up.

Let me assure you, there is very, very, very little room between the 345mm caliper edge and the inside of the rim on 17's. That's on the standard SVO fit "Elite" 17" rim. There's so little room you have to be careful where the balancing weights go. I'm talking less than 1mm with full pads.
