    Default 2.2 Petrol MPG

I'm getting terrible mpg out of my 2.2 petrol at the moment. I've worked out it's around 20 mpg which isn't good (around 250 miles for a full tank to completely empty). Anyone got any idea what could cause this? I'm getting quite a bit of squeaking from the brakes, wondered if there may be a problem with brake binding which would cause terrible fuel consumption.
I've also read that some vectras suffer from dodgy fuel gauges that give fuel misreadings. Anybody know how I spot this?

You'd know if it was the fuel gauge mate by how many litres you're putting in when you fuel it from empty...

Didn't think about that so it's definitely not the fuel gauge... filled up 50 liters from empty the other day. Anybody got any idea as to what's causing the problem? Could the brakes cause the bad mpg or something a lot more serious?

Could be a million things mate, first thing to check is if the brakes are hot after you stop driving. If they are binding, then the discs will be roasting hot after even a short drive...

A service does the world of good on the 2.2. Get some VX oil and air filter from Autovaux in Wakefield and disconnect the battery for 20 mins or unplug the comp to totally reset it and you should be hitting 27-28 for town driving.

Just read a few threads and it seems that people are suggesting the 2.2 does anything between 20 mpg around town to 35 mpg on the motorway. That's a lot worse than I was expecting, even for a lot of stop/start town driving. I will get the brakes checked out asap and see if it improves, might just be the fact that it's a lot thirstier than my 1.0 corsa.

As rushy said, I noticed very good improvements on my 2.2 after a good service!!

Really does do a good job. As already stated, used VX parts....

My 2.2 is excellent on fuel at the moment, hardly uses any petrol with the cylinder head on the floor of my kitchen !!!!!

Just a 'pointer'. The pre 'Direct' 2.2 engine is meant to be a bit more thirsty than its successor. I have read a few comments on forums of several people being disappointed at the mpg figure. However, your figure does seem low, hopefully you get to the bottom of it mate.Brakes seem a good place to start as well as what everyone else has suggested - tyre pressures, air filter, driving style

you will notice if its the barkes, the car will be holding back, not rolling freely and as said above, one or more wheels will be hotter than the others. Check the air filter, if its dirty, renew it. Put some fuel additive into the fuel followed a good blast or 2 up the autobhan. Check and or renew spark plugs. If oil looks really dirty, get a oil cleanser in there before doing an oil change. Other than that, it must either be the way of it for this car or some mechanical/electro mechanical engine/sensor fault.

And what about the other 11 litres?

The tank holds 61 litres, so either the gauge is under reading or your calculations are wrong.
