New Pads all round !!

Can anyone help, I have just had my brake pads changed all round, but the rear pads seem a bit strange, they look different to the fronts. On the rears I can see the actually pads whereas on the front I can't. (I'm not sure if this is normal) Also, on the rear right wheel it looks as though the garage have tried to grind off 2 protruding nubs as well. I cant think what for?

1st Picture shows rear left brake, nubs intact!

2nd picture shows rear right brake, nubs ground away!

3rd picture (albeit not very clear) shows front brake, which appears to have an extra part, which covers the area on the rears that allow me to see the brake pad.

Any comments are appreciated.

3rd picture is the retaining spring for the front calipers thats normal and must be put back on when you do the pads.

As for the ground down sticky out bits on the rear i cant think of a reason why that would be ground off

Do the rear calipers not have this retaining spring/cover?

Yes but looks completely different it looks more like coat hanger wire which you can see going into the 2 holes on either side of the caliper in your 2nd pic.

The rear pads I fitted a few weeks ago had sproings on the back of them which you can just make out on the inside rear pad here:



They help retain the pad in the caliper, but are only fitted to one side. They may have fitted them the wrong way round and just ground the springs off instead of taking it all apart again...

i have just replaced my rear pads on my 02 vec', those "nubs" are to locate into the pistons/calipers. The pads shown in your pics are for the inside of the disc's. There should be two "nubs" in the "longwise" direction to indicate the outside pads.The pads I was given via my local Vaux dealer were different to the original pads, those had square springs attached to them to stop the sqealing and rattling from the pads.

Are you saying that the garage that fitted them put the inside pads on the outside?

That caliper on Penfold's pic is different to mine. Mine has a hollow piston, and the pads have a big triangular clip that fits in to the hole in the caliper piston.

There's two types of pads, so maybe they used the wrong time and modified to suit?

Is that safe, as surely the 2 nubs that would be holding it into the caliper aren't actually there. Are they?

It should be fine, I think the pads are the same apart from the extra clip for the newer calipers. I couldn't see any difference between the two types, other than that clip.

If in doubt you should go get them checked, better safe than sorry of course.
