Smile Cam Chain on Signum jumped a tooth - FIXED!!!

    All,

Just thought i'd share this with you. As some of you may have read on a previous post my chain was rattling on and off on my Signum 2.2, but was intermittent and would do it hot or cold, only every now and again. Anyway, it jumped a tooth as i started it up last week and that was that- or so i thought.

Initially the first garage said that the engine is more than likely sh4gged, they said they could fit a new engine for £4K + vat!! - Not likely, or re-time for £1K+vat

Anyway, took it to a garage a friend knows, nothing fancy just a good honest mechanic who seems to love his cars.
Within the hour he told me that the valves weren't damaged, as he leak tested and had the feeler gauges out to check clearences etc.
He did find the cause of the problem as to why the chain had become slack and jumped. He found a bolt floating about when he took the cam chain cover off. It had sheared out of the head and was one of the bolts that holds a plastic chain guide in place. Its the one that doesn't move (usually) so god knows how it snapped! Anyway 3 hours of persisting he managed to drill out the snapped bolt without taking the head off and then helicolied it. Its weird how the bolts snapped as its not under any pressure and you cant overtighten it as has a shoulder on it so you dont crush the plastic guide.

New Chain and tensioner replaced, engine flushed, oil and filter, £500!!! Well happy

So not sure whether this is a problem anyone else has had, but just to be aware everyone, if like me you hear a rattle, get it checked out!

I saw your other thread and seriously doubted that a small chain jump would cause damage to other components, eg valves, pistons etc.

Good job though, it does pay to get second opinions and to ask others

Well done on this one, just think of the cost had you not sought a second opinion & no doubt a place you will be returning to for advice/service ......

the problem was either a faulty tenstioner or chain ... the system went slack chain moves and pulses and adds preshure to chain guide that is bolted on with that bolt that broke ...if you go to wwwz22se.co.uk there are a recent post about one i did where the bolt had decided to shear ..glad to here it all went fine ...
