    Default Gearbox Number 3!

As you all know, I had a new gearbox fitted in Jan/feb and after this the flywheel rattled, so this was replaced under the instruction of the Vauxhall field engineer alonh with another new clutch is case the old clutch was damaged in any way.

The rattle was still there and it's only been 540 miles since it was done, so I called into Marshall's yesterday to have it looked at and a close inspection was carried out again, it sounds like now that the input shaft on the replacement gearbox is faulty, so they rang Vauxhall who instantly authorised another new gearbox to be ordered and fitted. All being well another clutch and flywheel will be fitted as well as I am not convinced the input shaft may have damaged them. I'd be happier if they replace the box clutch and flywheel.

A bit if a pain, but again no hassle from Vauxhall. They have been excellent!

One thing I did'nt realise though, my new gearbox which was fitted under warranty was in fact a Vauxhall re-engineered box. You will only get a brand new box if the car has done under 3000 miles or a re-engineered box is not available.

Not that I am worried as long as the fault is cured.

Odd - 1.9 150 engine but now it's eating gearboxes for lunch instead of EGR and Swirl Valves...

    Must be dessert.....

My original gearbox spat out 3rd gear, which 'could' have been down to the owner before me not being very good with the gear change. I am just unfortunate that the replacement appears to be faulty.

I'd be more pee'd off if I was the techie - I know you had to remove the subframe on the Vectra B's to get at the gearbox even if it was just to change the clutch, so it must be a shed-load of work to get it out on the Signums...

I don't know if you do need to remove it. But both times the box has come out over the past month or two was done pretty quickly!

Blimey Matt - you're going through them there gearboxes like dinners!

Ref sub-frame - yes you do need to drop it to get the box out.

vauxhall dealers will have a jig that holds and aligns the subframe, once unbolted they can use it to drop the subframe or the whole engine and box, which is actualy easier than just removing the box on its own,as to using a recon box it is normal to use the cheapest option in the parts used, vauxhall exchange boxes are generaly very good, but like anything you cant guarantee that there will be faults with the replacement part, and that includes new parts as well,as to using new parts rather than recon parts on a car under 3k miles i was never told that when i worked for a vauxhall dealer in the parts

I can understand them using recon parts, after all it's Vauxhall paying for them and they have a right to use what ever parts are required to repair the car.

The workshop controller told me about the £3000 limit, whether this is a new ruling I don't know.
