Default SRi 150 CDTi vs Focus ST170

Hello there, and let me just say a very quick hello to everyone. I've perused the forum as a guest and everyone seems to be very friendly and polite, so I thought I would register to ask my question about the SRi 150 CDTi.

Let me give you a little background to myself, and I apologise in advance for any upsets!

Firstly, I am actually a Ford Focus owner, now on my second Focus. I'm 23, so have never driven anything bigger and the family sized hatch suits me well. I've always driven Fords, as I have liked the modern looks which happen to be 'new' when I am looking to buy! After my Fiesta 1.25, I had a Focus ST170 and now I am driving more, I have a 1.8 TDCi Focus MKII Titanium.

However, now that I have enraged you all slightly (!), I have an interesting situation on my hands. Someone rear-ended me two months ago in the Focus and finally it is being repaired. My courtesty car is a Vectra 1.9 150bhp CDTi.

I was apprehensive about having a Vauxhall (I'm not keen on my mum's Corsa 51 plate), but let me just say - the engine in this Vectra is rather impressive.

After booting the car a bit, I am slightly in awe of this diesel. Okay, 0-60 isn't as quick as my ST170, but I am wholly convinced that from 40mph to 100mph, it is definitely quicker. After all, diesel is all about the in-gear acceleration and the wave of torque.

I had a discussion with my father, and he played in my 170 a fair bit and doesn't think the diesel SRi is quicker, but I say he might be surprised by it.

My question to other owners, is this: am I right, in that this SRi is effing quick from around 40 upwards, or is it just because I've been stuck in my sluggish 1.8 diesel for so long? Can anyone point me to or describe comparible experiences?

Please try to be totally honest - I appreciate I am a Ford owner on a Vauxhall forum, but I am hopeful that some good quality information can come out of this thread! Many thanks in advance.

well, as already mentioned, 0-60 time isnt best, but the mid range accelerations are fantastic imo..

it has a lot of torque and it will quickly react to the slightest pedal movement..

not to mention that you can always remap or put a power box in it which would easily give you respectful 190ish bhp and 300ish lbft torque..

Yeah, the remap would be a good move if I owned it, but I only have it for a week or so! However, I do hear of people suffering from bust fuel rails because of remaps, but I am not sure to be honest. Will wait until warranty expires in 4 years perhaps?

Anyhow - thanks for your reply. I might also add, that I get 57mpg from it on the motorway at 70mph, which is the same as my Focus.

Yeah, I've seen in excess of 200bhp claimed on this engine, but as I mentioned above, it's a courtesy car unfortunately, so I won't be forking out any dosh for remaps!

Anyone with some on te road experiences that they can share?

Yep the 150 in gear accel. in standard form is good. With BSR remap its even better. Some 1.9CDTi engines do have failure issues though and its a bit of a lottery.

It does suffer from turbo lag quite badly, but as you say, in-gear acceleration due to the torque from about 2K is immense, and if you keep it in that rev range you can get some real speed going. The other bonus is that you don't need ot change gear on motorways - you just put your foot down and the torque is there to accelerate...

If you get a good one that doesn't break, it's one of the best engines for power vs fuel economy...

ST170 isn't a quick car. It's actually an insult of Ford putting the ST badge on there in the first place. The diesel Vectra is probably about the same weight, probably close to the same horsepower, and will definitely have considerably more torque.
