Default sludge and a smell of petrol

As i was bored on Monday thought I'd pop out to the car and have a potter around her, cleaned the alloys, hoover all going well until i thought i would check the oil.
When i 1st took out dip stick there was a mustard colour on it after wiping it a dipping it a few times this seemed to go (but not entirely) but there was a strong smell of petrol coming from the dip stick but when i stuck my nose into the oil filler there wasn't a smell there the car is due for a service and i have only owned the car for a year (exactly) can anyone help
Also what is the best type of oil to use .. i have a 2.2 sri 2002

If you use it for small stop start journeys this could also be the problem it wont burn off condensation inside the engine, change the oil and filter and take it out for a long drive every now and then to give it a good heat up.

sounds like head gasket symptons to me fella. sludge or mayo is the water mixing with the oil. the only way petrol can get into the oil is head gasket failure...

to be certain you can get a compression test done. you might also be able to smell petrol in the coolant tank. a garage can 'sniff' this for you using a gasket that will tell you if the coolant is contaminated with petrol.

other signs are dropped coolant and oil levels.

thought the filler neck issue was only on 3.2 v6's ???
everything else has the shorter neck so this shouldnt be the cause?
