    confused Engine Issues? 1.9 CDTi

    Morning All,

We are getting a VX 1.9 CDTi 120 HP.

    Elite spec, etc....

Just wondered if therre is anything we should be looking at? Engine troubles?
Recalls that shouldve been done? are they reliable?

    Car has 40,000 miles.

Any help and advice, will be groovy baby!

    Cheers,
    Ian

Main issues i've heard of, but effecting the 150 cdti more commonly are:

    EGR Valve
    Swirl Valve
    Dual Mass Flywheel
Problems with the inlet manifold, affecting the Turbo
    3rd Injector Wiring

Apparently the issues are more prevailent on the 150, than the 120.
I'd say make sure it has got a decent service history, and if you have any doubts, make sure you highlight them, before purchasing.

Only recall that i can think of is for the handbrake modification, to stop your car from rolling away!

I learnt yesterday (from a differnt thread on here) that the 120 doesn't have swirl valves - so that potential issue can be removed from the list . Also, apparently the EGR isn't as problematic on the 120.

    Are those bits expensive?

Yes they are, not sure on exact costs, as ive only had my sri 150 3 weeks.
I think the DMF is about £800 with fitting, and inlet issues arent cheap. £900ish????

If the turbo gets shafted, that's expensive. Not sure on injector wiring.

As i said previously, make sure the service history is up to scratch, but from what ive read the 120 is certainly the safer bet.

Ive got a 120 (purchased 8 months ago now 100k on clock) and just changed glow plugs as spanner light came on.
Looks like mine has had a new alternator recently (before i bought the car) so these must fail, something to watch out for.
Mine has an occasional misfire which I believe is down to 3rd injector plug wiring, easy diy job.
If you intend to change the oil and filters yourself get yourself a new sump plug as they shear easily.
My dmf has started making a noise when clutch pedal depressed so another big job coming up for me.

    tankman,

The problem you would be seeing is just the odd misfire, it seems to happen when the engine is very hot , hotter than normal running temp' i.e. after stood in traffic for a while then setting off when the engine is labouring particularly in second or third gear. No engine management light and car runs just as normal. to help keep temperatures down around the injector area, I have removed the plastic engine cover and left it off
