Diesel Filter?

has anybody changed their own diesel filter on a 1.9 150bhp engine i have read that you need a special tool to bleed the system and if the pump is run dry you can cause damage

Just have some clean diesel to hand and top up the new filter before fitting. The pump will have diesel in the pressure chamber so as soon as you start up, it will immediately pressurise the rail and fire up. By that time, it will have started to pull fuel through your already primed fuel filter. If you don't prime the filter with clean diesel, you will be cranking it over 'til sunset. It is messy, 'cause you spill more than you get in but it is necessary. Trust me, I go through this ritual about 2 or three times a day

thanks gary you have put my mind at ease a bit, do i need any special tools to blank pipes off or anything .

You will loose diesel out of the pipes when you take them off the filter, but it is just theresidual amount in the pipes, maybe a half a cupful if that. You don't need to blank any pipes off. You will make a mess, guaranteed, but it is quite unavoidable. Good luck, you'll not need it though, it's easy.

I can't recall the type of method used on the Vecs but it will be either, a squeeze together two flats and pull up type (older design) or more likely, colour coded clips that push through the bottom part of the pipe and hold it onto the tube of the filter. So, looking at the pipes where they fit onto the filter, look for the coloured 'rectangle', on the other side of the pipe from the coloured rectangle will be the two ends of this coloured clip. Using both forefingers push these two ends inwards towards each other and then push the clip out (pushing towards the rectangle) if you see what I mean, then the clip will slide out and you can then pull the pipe off. Don't worry about getting them on the wrong tubes when replacing, because you can't, the colour coding and the fact that they are all different sizes keeps you right (There is 1x fuel delivery, 1x fuel outlet and 1x fuel leak off/return). I can't think of any other way to explain it. This paragraph may become clear when you look at the pipes. HTH
