Default Laptop help as in which one??

    Hi,

I am looking at buying a laptop and retiring my desktop due to space issues etc. I have a budget of around £400 - £450 and need advice as to whats good and what to avoid.

I have seen an advert on Comet for a Toshiba one priced at £349 that is 3gb memory etc.

I have a seperate 350gb hard drive that I will be keeping but the laptop must be capable of handling CS4 Suite and Lightroom etc etc.

    Thanks in advance.

For that budget you will get yourself a real decent laptop! all makers seem to have stepped up to the mark and they are all competitive with each other! a trip to PC World might be best for you! like you say for running the software the more memory the better and see if you can get a dual core or quad core processor! one thing i would consider looking into is the battery life! over the last few years the battery life on laptops has improved imensly, some laptops are capable of 5hrs plus! only saying as my brother bought a Sony Vaio and he is lucky to get 1 1/2 hrs out of it! not so good if you like sitting in the lounge whilst posting on here! just like me

A girl at work just picked up one of these - same price in store - looks pretty good value. There's a 4gb RAM plus 320Gb hard disc one for £429.

    I have this one http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Asp...51/version.asp

It runs cs4 and lightroom no probs and has full 1080p HD graphics and bluray. Biometric security (fingerprint scanner), 250gb hard drive, 3gb ram, Intel core 2 Duo, dolby surround sound etc..

    I find it fantastic!!

The best one for peace of mind is a Dell. They all come with discs to re-install if you have h/d failure. With XP you can use any disc with the key on the bottom of the laptop. With Vista you can't , so if you have h/d failure or bad virus you have to buy another copy of vista with a new key. All other laptops to not come with backup discs. I have had 4 dells now and never had a problem . I am always fixing Tosh. HP etc . I' ve got a tosh here now. I have got to and but a new copy of vista to go on as per my remarks above. The vista repair facility on it will not repair the software fault.

    The above is incorrect!!

The Acer laptop I have gives you the option when you first run it to create "restore discs" which put the laptop back to factory default. They are not Vista discs but Acer restore discs and restore the hard Drive image to what it was when you first take it out of the box and you start again!!

Infact all of the last 3 PC's I have bought (Acer Laptop, Acer Desktop and a Compaq) have had this feature, and is down to the user to actually use this funtion which is highly recommended.

I agree with that on Acer. but if you get one scratch on the disc or the disc does not copy correctly you are back to base. With dell you can use any dell disc to reinstall Vista or XP with no need to enter key.
