Default 2.2 DTi Struggles to start...

    Hey all,

My 2.2DTi with 84,000miles on takes it's time to start. It turns over perfectly fine, however i have to keep it turning over for at least 3-5seconds before it bursts into life, the odd occasion a bit longer.

I'm used to other Vauxhall diesels, and have always waited for the glow plug light to extingush before turning them over, this model doesn't have a light and even though I've left the ignition on for 10seconds or so each time it doesn't improve the start.

Is this a common thing for this engine? I've only owned this car for a week!!! Someone PLEASE tell me it's an easy fix... lol

    Si

does this happen when left for a period ie over 5-6hrs, or every time you start it? Any smoke when it does fire?

Everytime, whether still warm or not. I did a few short journeys round town today and each time the same thing. I'd say it's more 2-4 seconds eachtime, it has failed to start on first attempt before to. It doesn't smoke at all (as far as i know).

The DTi has got a glowplug light. You won't see it unless it's below 4C, or your heating circuit isn't working.

I'd say your leakoff pipes are dosed, letting air in to the pump.

I've heard of leakoff pipes on this forum, what are they, where are they and are they easy to replace? (Sorry for the 20 questions )

They're the little black rubber hoses at the front of the engine that return unused fuel from the injectors. They doze and let air in to the injectors.

Any mechanic will be able to replace them, it's a very common problem with the 2.0 and 2.2DTi engines. Parts are less than a tenner for a roll of the hose and new t-pieces, and half an hour should do the job.

Cheers - I've been researching it this evening and gonna go to Vauxhall's tomorrow morning to see if they have this in stock, then have a go changing it over.

    Thanks chaps!!

It's not only that, it's also injector seals that go, this is a more involved job, but if the hoses don't cure it that will be your next avenue, car will start sometimes if it's only stood a few hours, leave it a day or two and it wont, tip for you if you have a hill nearby, park it nose down, this helps until you can get it fixed.
