    Default cherrished transfer...???

Does anybody know if a local dvla office can transfer a cherrished number straight away from one vehicle to another with all relevant docs of course at their offices? where as its just a matter of getting a new tax disc and number plate certiicate off themand away you go!

Or do they just send everything to Swansea, and make you wait for the new documents ?

I know if you have a retention certificate it can be done straight away, and get a new tax disc off them, and all you do is put the plates on and send them the old tax disc!!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Roy

    The rules have changed.

You used to be able to get everything done while you wait. The following should help.

    1) If you have a plate on retention, you can have it assigned to your car the same day after your visit to the DVLA local office. They will give you a new tax disc etc there and then.

    2) If you want to put your cherished number ON retention, they will sort all the paperwork out over the counter, but it then takes up to 7 working days for them to process the retention, after 7 working days you will recieve a tax disc and legal papers to put the original plate back on the car. They now always put the original plate back if it is available.

    3) To transfer a plate from one car to another. The procedure is the same as point 2.

A few years ago, everything was done over the counter while you wait, but they change the rules about 18 months ago.

    almost right

they do not automatically put the original number back on, I had this from the man at the counter after mine wasn't, he double checked afterwards and it was still available but it was too late by then

the number of days it takes them also varies by a huge amount, mine took over 14 days just at the local office, then over 3 further weeks from Swansea

they no longer overwrite your MOT, haven't done for over 2 years since electronic MoT cert's came into force

they now reissue electronic MoT certs with the new number
