they shouldn't even be called rain sensitive wiper - more like semi as like you say they need to be switched on and off manually. The only thing the sensor does is control the speed.

I hate them, there pants imo. I hate it when they go full speed, in 15 yrs of driving i've never used my wipers on full speed. My Laguna was just the same, had to switch them on

My other car. 1972 1641cc slammed beetle. On the road finally!!

I like them. Remember they only work in rain-sensing mode in what would otherwise be the intermittent setting, and can be overridden for higher speeds by moving the stalk upwards. It starts raining, and I move the stalk to the first setting, and let them do their job adjusting the sensitivity if required.

they are switched off by default and for a very good reason, you would not want your wipers going when the blades are stuck to the screen, one burnt out motor later,it is the best way so you have to activate them.

as to it being mentioned about the sensor only adjusting the speed, how do you work that out? the sensor tells the control unit how wet the screen is and tells the control unit when to activate the wipers, only when the screen is very wet does the speed vary,it has been mentioed tht the rain sensor is cr*p,you want to try the system fitted to the citroen xsara, that had no adjustment at all,it was easier not to use it at all,the vectra system is brilliant,if your wipers go too fast you have the sensitivity set too high, try turning the scroll wheel to the left, that is where mine is and i have no problems with the wipers going flat out

Also try going thru a drive-in car wash if you've forgotten to switch your engine off LOL

Rain-sensitive wipers are only activated as they are needed and at the speed they are needed, thereby optimising wiper use and reducing wiper wear.

Got them on my wifes Astra... right pain in the arse! When its ever so finely spitting, they wont come on in sensor mode, so have to turn them onto normal speed as there is no other way of getting variable intermittent wipe... so annoying!

You won't find many (if any) that have fully automatic wipers, Peugeots, Jags, Ford etc... they all have to be switched on first.
