    Default reg transfer

help guys , i think my car is getting written of as i hit a flood in it and waters up over seats , no body damage but engine has locked up and there is no electrics questions is what do i do with my personalised plate ?? do i put it on retenion now or do i wait until i have been told the car is a total loss? i've been told by the garage that towed the motor in that i have to get a letter from my insurance company (more than) saying they have no interest in the plate but insurance told me earlier that the car will probably be picked up and taken to a salvage yard because it is flood damage and will probably be a total loss , so i don't know what to do with plate , put on retention now or wait to see what more than say?? thanks in advance for any replys sh****g myself as i've never dealt with insurance companys before

Phone the DVLA urgently, I would retain it or you will lose it. If someone were to purchase the damaged car they would also have your number. Get it sorted asap imo hth ....

    Vehicle : Jaguar XF 3.0D V6

    Trim : Black

    Engine : 3.0D V6

    Year : 0000

Firstly write to your insurance company informing them of your intention to keep the plate, and they have no title to it.
Then complete the necessary form from DVLA and TAKE IT IN TO YOUR LOCAL OFFICE AND GET THEM TO DO IT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE !
Do not send your V5C in any form to anyone until you have the retention certificate back from DVLA, as this can 'cancel' the retention process.

As said on here, I would do the following :-

Call the insurance company and explain that you wish to retain the number plate. They will then log this, and when they receive the V5 will put the plate on retention and deduct the £105 from your settlement figure. This is standard practise.

If you put the plate on retention now, it will delay your settlement figure as you will not be able to produce the V5. Then confiorm this in writing and send by recorded post.

I would then do the same with the DVLA. Don't worry, you won't lose the plate if you follow the correct procedures.

If you do nothing the plate will go with the car.

    You have the V5?
Retain it now, go to your local office if you can (http://www.dvla.gov.uk/contactus/loc.../findnear.aspx) with the paperwork, tax disc and MoT (if required) etc and do it there to save on posting time.
I put a plate on retention a while back and had the retention paperwork and new V5 back in about a week, as car sales are at an all time low just now I cannot imagine it would be any longer, the DVLA are not busy!

If you do this, it will delay the guys settlement figure, yes your right you will get the paperwork will be back after 7 working days.

But the insurance company will not pay out until they have the V5, this is stated as taking up to six weeks.

There is not an issue here, Insurance companies have clear procedures in place to allow the owner to retain his/her cherished number.

    One other thing, guys....

DO NOT claim the tax disk back until you have put your plate "on retention" - If you do, the DVLA will usually INSIST on seeing the car before allowing it... And the DVLA wont go to the car, the car MUST be taken to them...

Pathetic I know, but true nevertheless. (Happened with my stepsons written off car).

The only way round it (if the tax is reclaimed), is to get the car re-MOT'd!!!

I would rather have the retention document! My V5 came back quickly enough as I stated in my post.
I've heard of too many instances where the number has been "lost". Not recently I admit but I would not take the risk myself.

Hope the OP gets it all sorted out.
