Default Cam Chain Slipped - Whats my best option now!!

    Hello everyone...

Not been the best day today... i have a 54 plate 2.2 petrol Signum design. Just recently there has been an intermittant rattle, i thought it could be the chain but with it being intermittent and happening when it was cold or hot, didnt get it checked out like our dads always told us we should!! Inevitable happened, yesterday i went to start it and it fired but stalled straight away.

Engine then just turned over really quick and i knew it was bad news...

I towed it to the garage and they have confirmed the chain was slack and has slipped out of time...

They are telling me my best option is a replacement engine, because it could have caused all sorts of problems, not just bent valves and marked pistons as i thought would be the case.

So what are my options and would i get any change from vauxhall? the car was registered dec 04 and has done about 45K.. surely these things shouldnt happen at this stage??

Just waiting to find out how much an engine will be from the garage, so depending on what they say, i guess my other options are:-

    - Sell the car as is - how much could i expect to get??? Apart from the obvious, the car is in good condition and would think would be worth about £4K running

    - Try and recon/rebuild the engine

Has anyone had the same dilemma??

    Thanks guys for any info

you need to know what damage has been done before you make a decision the comment COULD OF CAUSED ALL SORTS OF DAMAGE is true but they cant tell you for sure until the head has been removed .
it has been known for a chain to snap and done no damage to the engine at all you may be lucky and just need a new chain kit but it has to be stripped down to know for sure

ok with regards vauxhall they say cambelts/ chains should be changed atleast every 4 years, so i dont think you'll get anywhere with that one and as for the engine, ok bent valves snapped chain etc etc but no one knows the damage untill its been stripped down do a rebuild take it to another garage if this one cant be arsed but in my opinion a decison of a new engine cant be made on that. It needs stripping

sorry for your bad news mate

yep, i agree with what you are saying, who knows whats happened until its stripped.
How much of a diy job is it to get the head off, i am an engineer by trade and have ex vauxhall mechanic cousin, so from a tech point i could do it/get it done.... My question is what specialist tools are needed to do the job?

The comment about chains snapping and doing no damage at all is encouraging, especially when my car hadnt even really fired up...
