    Default HELP - Dangerous Rattle

    Hi all,

My appologies for the abrut introduction but I have a serious problem with the Vectra I've just brought and I need the car on the road and the garage are being useless!

The car is an 04 2.0 DTi LS. 98,000 miles.

When I test drove the car it felt slightly wobbly (like a shock had gone) but I gave it a quick bounce test, it seemed fine and I just assumed having come out of an old R reg BMW the ride was just softer.

Over the next few days the car developed a rattle which comes from the rear of the car. It rattles when going over bumps and listening to it I think it's coming from the off side rear.

The rattle disappears under braking but more worryingly over bumps more so at speed it feels like the back of the car is almost disconnected, or has hit a patch of ice.

I have had the garage I brought it from check it and having removed and checked the rear brakes and having a pry at all the suspension arms they found nothing (I watched the guy do it).

However the problem is getting worse and last night when coming off a slip road at about 55-60mph I went over a bump and nearly got chucked in a ditch!

    Any ideas PLEASE.

    Many Thanks in advance.

    Dave

Hi, no had a good look underneath, springs look fine as do the shocks. Rear caliper springs all in place and virtually brand new pads on the rear.

As Steve says, rattle is probably broken spring, check properly whne in the air.

The reason your car feels like its on ice could be the rear control arms, impossible to diagnose with the naked eye and when in the air.

DID THE GARAGE CHECK THESE WHILST THE CAR WAS IN THE AIR/OFF THE GROUND?

    Symtoms of this-from experience is:

    - knocking/thud sound on uneven road;

    - put your arm into the wheel arch whilst all 4 wheels are on the ground, and pull the wheel outwards towards you (with you hand on the top inside of thr wheel/tyre, if you get any metallic sound or movement then these are a dead cert!

These were gone on my ex-Vec-C and the car was very twitchy on the rear.

Try it, and I hope this helps!

    Good luck.

Hi, just tried your method of checking, when tugging at the top of both rear wheels there is some movement (only slight) and a light metalic donk, is that what you are talking about with the rear control arms?

I'll have to get them to put it no the ramp to check the springs again.

    Thanks for all the help.

Thats one problem mate, there should be ZERO movement there and they should be as solid as a rock. That metallic donk type sound is the bushes touching/hitting against the metal, hence knackered bushes, which means new control arms. Luckily these aint too expensive to change-your looking at about £60.00 for the pair posted off ebay. They aint the easiest to change, and will take a few hour's, so you could choose to have them done at a garage, likely cost-about £70-£100 fitting, plus your cost for the parts. I bought mine from HERE-£59.90 inc P+P.

Yep, for sure, as Glynn says, check the coil spring at the base for a piece snapped off, etc....I have had one of these break on me too....so its all very common!

Hope you get to the bottom of it bud!

Pay? Pah, I only brought it 17 days ago, I shall ensure that I don't pay a penny but thank you all very much for the assistant. I'm off to the garage to throw my toys out of my pram!
