Dunno about people, but at college i was told because it caused accelerated bore wear (detonation/bore wash) over time compression was lost and as diesels need a higher compression starting help was needed more and more, hence the addiction.

If you use it too often the engine (normally diesels) may end up relying on it more and more??

    That's correct guys.
We could always tell if someone was trying to start a machine in the yard using easy start.... the smell gave it away.

well the theory i got was because easy start combusts with a big bang it compresses conrods a smidge every time you use it, leading to lower compression and the need to use easy start for the next start up.
come on boys sombody knows the real reason!!

Tyreman is correct. It drys the walls of the cylinders leading to wear (immediately on use I might add), all lubricant is stripped from the bore. continued use will perpetuate this process leading to bore taper and ovality. This can lead to bore wash, then you're in trouble. Some people reckon putting a new set of injectors in will cure it. If it has been used for prolonged periods, then no, it won't. A re-bore and new injectors will, but how much is that gonna set you back Simple answer is, if your diesel is hard to start, find out why and put it right.

it usually brakes the rings so u loose compression so causes starting fault so thats why they say its addictive cause u need to use it all the time a start pilot works the same way but it releases such a small quantity that it does not do the damage the damage is usually caused by the finger on the trigger to long

It's an ether based spray that is MEGA inflammable. You spray it into the air intake to 'persuade' an engine to start. Ferocious stuff that I avoid if I can help it. If an engine started ok before and now its hard to start, then theres a reason. it never needed easy start before so it shouldn't need it now
