    and
where can can i get a code reader at a reasonable price?
i have had the car on the diagnostics twice in the last week and at £30 a time i would rather pay for my own machine, then i can do other peoples aswell.
    cheers, mick.

    ok, cheers.
i have just been and picked up the car from the garage, and the faultcode P0400 has been stored twice with two different descriptions of faults, these are:-
P0400-exhaust gas recirculation system amount insufficient.
P0400-exhaust gas recirculation solenoid valve signal improbable.
has anyone elce had these fault codes and what did you do to fix them?
i have ordered a new EGR valve, will this fix the faults?? cheers, mick.

As Gregc stated, a replacement EGR should fix all your problems.

TBH, Its really a very simple job to remove it and give it a good clean, plenty of HOW-2's on here showing how to do it.

I just gave it a good soaking in a carb cleaner, and using a stiffish brush and plenty of cotton buds, clean all the crap from around the 2 circular valves, one in each aperture. Also, make sure you clean out as much crap as possible from inside where it bolts on, as the sooty deposits really build up quite a lot inside there, you need to do this anyway even when fitting a new EGR.
Make sure you dont drop the aluminum gasket when removing it. Probably wise to replace both gaskets, but I re-used mine and all seemed okay.

It's surprising how the pickup performance falls off due to a partly blocked EGR even well before it puts up a fault code.
Even after just 12 to 15k after fitting a new EGR I noticed that my old Vec-c was lacking that fast pickup oooph when you hit the accerator, but a couple of hours or less spent cleaning it resulted in that fast pickup returning again.
