You do need to go to your DVLA local office, OR, post the details to your local office.

    Documents required

    Completed Retention Form
    V5
    MOT Cert - If applicable

You will get the plate retention info within 7 working days of your application being submitted, then it can take up to 6 weeks for the V5 to be returned with the original plate. You are not allowed to sell the car until you have the V5 back.

yes as all you will do is hand the docs over the counter

be warned though, they are slow! I did mine very recently and the tax/mot took 2 weeks to come back from the local office, the V5 from swansea took almost 5 weeks, as did the retention cert (also issued from swansea)

also be aware that you need to ask if you want the original reg to be transferred back, they don't do it automatically

It is now standard practice for the DVLA to re-issue the original registration plate to the car if it is available.

Between me and the wife, we have transfered our plates 8 times in the past 6 years and have got the original back every time without asking, the DVLA will tell you if your original plate is not available.

The DVLA local offices are obliged to have the transfer/retention done in 7 working days and are targeted as such.

You will reveive the new tax disc, MOT and number plate authorisation certificate any after after the 7 day turn around time, this will allow you to put the original plates back on the car. As stated, up to 6 weeks can pass for the V5 and retention certificate to be issued.
