back box query

was jet washing underneath the car yesterday and noticed that the drivers side back box looks smashed and corroded. But after looking at it a bit more closely it appears to have two skins with just the outer being damaged. how long will this last? i don't want to replace just the backbox when i intend to replace the whole thing with a full stainless but insurance must come first.

My back boxes looked the same and it was shock horror at the time. When I took the boxes off the car the outer skin was rotten but the box was ok. I removed the outer skin with a chisel and grinder and then painted the box with black heat proof paint and all has been well for over a year.

Aye, mine has done the same, I'm just going to leave it be as i'm going to get a custom stainless put on it when funds are available , the mechanic I spoke to on saturday said it wouldn't need replacing until it started blowing significantly

Eye. Mines the same I just done the deed at the side of the road when it half fell off.

I think Road Salt has a lot to do with most corrosion problems ............................

the outer skins fall off a lot of the time, just get it off and replace when your through the inner skin and its blowing

The outer skin of my back box fell off last July. I thought it would need replacing straight away especially as the car was shortly going abroad for 2 weeks, but the exhaust places I went to all said it would be fine.

It's still there now - about 9 months later - and it's still OK. I'm just keeping an eye on it every month or so for signs that the remaining skin is about to let go.

My outer one corroded through and my garage cut it off passed the MOT year later still fine passed MOT again it's a common problem.
