    Default Amateur Radio.

Has anyone put a Amateur Radio in there Veccy/Signum??..

Looked at a manual for a Vectra and it says no more than 10 watts?, so what wouls happen if someone parked next to you running 100 watts?, would it damage the ECU??.

it would probably interfere with the ECU or other RF sensitive electrics like the immob. On my motorbike I output at 7.5w and it doesn't effect anything as the aerial has enough distance aware from sensitive parts but I do find that the RFI that my HIDs put out which are mounted closely to my digital dash board display causes it to crash about once every twenty startups. I have to reset it by removing a fuse and replacing after 20 or so seconds. I guess lower quality equipment could be worse and even develop permanent issues or a fault because of it.

Also 100w is peak draw of nearly 10amps which beyond the output of most ciggy lighters so you likely to pop fuses as well as causing RFI.

Continuing this thread from some time ago Im interested to find out what sort of aerial mounting solutions other people have used on their Signums???

you have only got a few options 1 use a magmount 2 use a gutter mount like a k40 antenna style as you can adjust the angle or take out the rear wiper arm and mount dv27 type mount and a quick disconnect type fitting

Im running the Yaesu ft-7800 on 50w from the cigarette lighter and it powers up no problem, as for HF id be tempted to wire direct to the battery with 20 amp fuses on both leads to be safe this is what im going to do for the Ic 706 to run 100w.

As for ecu problems none to be had car runs fine & good dx from your car mate.

Aerial are mag mounts only then can remove.

Noticed a very old post so original poster may have sorted it.

I would be really keen to see any pics you have. I have the pop out plastic area on my roof with roof bar attachement points, its a shame something cant be done with them.

Didnt realise there were so many "Ham"s on here lol

Used to have a Yeasu FT-290R in my old Cavalier many years ago along with an 80 channel CB rig (in the days before it was legal to have all 80 in one radio). Also had a set of 300w Zetagi's under the seat for the CB and never caused any issues to anything in my car (although I did bleed through onto a passing police car's radio much to his annoyance as he told me when he pulled me over for it ).

Haven't used any form of radio for many years now and sold all my CB and Ham gear a good few years back, but kept the licence renewal up until they turned it into a perpetual licence. Must let them know my new address at some point I suppose lol

Edit: 2m aerial on the left, CB on the right...

I ran an alinco dx70 at 100W and burnt the ciggy socket up..ended up wiring straight to the battery....In my opinion I wouldn't think running more power would give any issues..there are transmission masts all over the place running lots of Watts at different frequencies.. plus many more sources of rfi and vec/sigs are still okay...perhaps '10Watts' is an 'inside the car' figure?

Lol, we all did it. I used to run a Ham International Jumbo with something stupid like 1300 channels on it. (Super highs to super lows on AM/FM/SSB etc). Even after I passed my class B licence I still used that for all my CB use, used to love that radio lol
