    Default TV license

Can anyone tell me, if i do not renew my tv license would i be breaking the law if i watched tv on the internet, i.e bbc i player and C4oD etc etc? Basically tv is crap nowadays, and what i do find worth watching is almost always on the channels catch up media player. I have a hdmi cable to link my laptop to tv so dont really see the point in renewing my license

I'm sure I read somewhere that it isn't illegal YET.

I belive that you will need a licence to view the telly on a laptop. If it is plugged into the mains. But not if you are just using the laptop batteries. I looked into this for my daughter at university. There was some information on a government site, I can not remember which one.But TV licencing might be a place to start.

The licence covers 'receiving equipment' (TV's, freeview boxes, PC tuner cards etc) so the TV needs to be engineered so that it is impossible to receive the signals. I'm sure you would need to prove that your TV is now incapable of receiving a live broadcast - a signed letter from an engineer for example, otherwise TV Licensing can argue you are still operating 'receiving equipment'.

yup exactly.....i hate paying for this especially with a £50 skyhd bill a month as well!!! but what the gov do is look for houses without a lisence andcheck them out - lets face it how many people dont have a tv? makes for an easier life just to bite the bullit and pay

If u didnt want to pay the fee you would need to get rid of the TV complety.

They would still fine you as it is still capable of receiving a signal.

Sorry mate... but we are all had by this one and you cannot get around it.

I know a family who have a TV for watching DVD's only - their TV has been rendered incapable of receiving a signal by the Aerial socket being disabled somehow, and they have no freeview boxes etc in the house. so it is possible to own a TV with no licence...

God (sorry, master) I hate the TV licence. Unbelievable that we're forced to pay for that junk, keeping those talentless presenters going with their £mutli-million salaries. Outdated & archaic just like the royal family. Just use advertisement like ITV, and stop this daylight robbery!!
I only watch sport channels, to hell with the BBC's rubbish.
