    Default antifreeze and distilled water

as my antifreeze is due for replacement (5 year old) im thinking of refilling with distilled water as it does not bubble when it gets hot like tap water so is better if the engine gets hot, plus it does not cause furring like tap water does,i do not know if vauxhall/opel use it at the factory or if they use tap water ,i know the japanese use distilled water and all japanese motorcycles use it,what are your oppinions on this?

    they don't use water.

they use a premixed solution which you buy from dealers/motor factors mate!

Strange that; each time I've bought the long life antifreeze from VX you have to mix with water as it didn't come premixed.

I would have thought that any decent mfr would use distilled/de-ionised water - I cant see using plain old tap/ordinary water worth the risk

Just had a look in the owners manual on this and it says in there about topping up antifreeze; says ' If no antifreeze is available, top up with clean Tap Water, if Tap Water is unavailable, distilled water can be used' !! you'd think it would be the other way round wouldn't you! mind you I've always used tap water even when changing coolant and never had any problems and I 've done this for years.

Ok, it is the best thing to do really as there are no additives in the disilled water , namely chlorine, salt and some others that over time could slowly corrode the water ways in the engine and even affect the head gasket, but having said that I also have a feeling that antifreeze would possibly neutralise these, I don't know for sure, anyhow I've always used Tap water myself and not had any issues from using it.
    Cheers Pete
