    Default Mazda RX8.

was looking for a general car chat section but couldn't find one maybe i am blind,so sorry if this is in the wrong section

I am thinking about getting a RX8 as a toy hobbie car as you can pick the earlier ones up for decent money now.
just wanted to pick anybodys brains on here to see if anybody know anything about them?? good bad etc

Check the type of oil it uses. I have been told that the older ones have to run on cheap oil as semi-synthetic or fully synthetic makes some of the seals inside the engine wear out quickly. Don't know if it was a new or older model but the guy thought it was better to use a synthitic oil and it cost him a good few quid to have the seals replaced. Thats the only thing I have heard and there meant to be thirsty with poor mpg. I would still take one though.

my cousin has one the 190 bhp version he likes it but admits its not that quick and drinks nearly as much oil as petrol but it is a nice looker
and apparently you have to have the engine out at 50000 to change the tips on the rotory thingys

low service intervals being a rotary. Not one you can easily mess about with tuning wise.

a sensible response at last thanks keith.
i know the service intervals are short but i would not be doing big miles in it.
i am just wondering if the engine is like the RX7 one were you basically have to rebuild the engine every 40-50k miles.

They drink fuel and oil for fun , I also here alot goes wrong with them , on the other hand i think they handle well.

Oh and i'm sure the rx7 and rx8 are 2 completely different beasts and the RX8 doesnt need a rebuild every 5 yards lol

As an alternative have you thought of something like a Supra or mitsi GTO TwinTurbo?

my sister-in-law has one, nice car, my brother does keep an eye on the oil & I think they get around 23mpg. rock solid reliability wise, only problem they had was the door lock had to be replaced. the 50K engine out is wrong, no such thing. under 4K revs you might as well be in a fiesta, higher revvs is good fun. I would say good for a second car or hobby, prices are rock bottom atm.
