    Default Playstation duff

My sons Playstation has ceased to function....it is dead. I plucked up the courage to take the cover off, give it a dust and wipe the laser over, but it still goes to the configuration menu. It won't load any games.

Anybody repaired one. Is replacing the laser easy (and cheap).

Urgent advice needed...he's driving me mad.

Unless its an easy and cheap fix, i would suggest getting a 2nd hand replacement, either from fleabay or a games shop.

Bless your son, he knows how to get what he wants eh?

When it tries to load up does it make a louder than usual clicking/whirring sound?
If it does then it's the rail that the optical eye runs on.
There is a plastic runner that slots onto the rail that the motor runs that wears out, it's a simple fix too, there is a tiny screw on the oposite runner to the one that is fed by the motor, if you tighten it a few turns it puts the required pressure back on the shaft.

If it is this and you need any more info pm me and I'll help you through it.

    HTH

It sounds like that's what mine needs then - it's just a bit temperamental, not totally refusing to play discs. Not doing it today though, I've done enough damage already.

When my PS2 died I opted for a modified XBox, huge hard drive & some nifty software for £250 (inc the £99 for XBox) and I have thousands of emulator games from Atari 2600, all the Sega & Nintendos & loads of arcade stuff (remember track & field?) aswell as up to I think 40 XBox games on the hard drive I opted for with the option to load on any games you can lay your hands on or rent. The 40 XBox games alone if bought for say £30 each (which they're not, most likely more) comes to £1200 worth alone.

When I first got it I was playing a 1980's version of Outrun on a 40" tv in my living room with home theatre surround system, well cool.

Paid £1.97 for a new laser arm. Took fifteen minutes to fit. A bit of vaseline on the runners. Now working as good as new. I'm a genius!!

Unfortunately not! He's discovered the delights of pc games on daddies computer. He's taken a shine to WW2 strategy games.
