Check for an oil leak first of all mate...

Black smoke could be an airleak or chocked filter..boost hose off..

Altho it is a bit strange it passed an mot today as the oil would have to be checked before the test went ahead..standard practice..i know some dont mind you.

There is an issue here, but I can't remember what it is exactly, but it's not a major problem iirc, it's something like a turbo hose or similar that causes it, have a look on a 406 site I'm sure you'll find the answer there.

is the engine management light on ?

does the vehicle drive normally ? i.e. not in limp home mode? how many miles has it done??? last service/next service due.....

several possible causes on this type of engine i suspect its either a dw10 or dw12 ... possible egr valve problem, particulate filter not working correctly - oil leak on turbo pipes -etc, send me a pm mate with the reg or chassis and i will check the citroen database for common faults on the chassis /build and see if there are any recall outstanding
