    Default alternator troubles

just bought the car last week vec c sri cdti 150bhp and now the alternator is dud, vauxhall say its not under any of the recalls so having to shell out to buy another 1, cheapest i can find is from a local motor factors for £203 inc vat, does any body else know anywhere that might be cheaper?? vaux wanted £335+vat, kwick fit want £350 fitted but i can do it myself just a bit of a squeeze getting it out from behind the engine,

i didnt know that when the alternator is not working the power steering stops and the abs stops working too, i though with the belt still turning it would still run power steering atleast??

    cheers

The steering is not belt driven but powered by an electric pump under the front o/s wing. When you switch of and it is quite you can hear the pump run down. The idea being that if the belt breaks you still have steering.

If you can go without the car for a while, get the alternator repaired by an auto electrician.
That's what I did, and it's been fine now ever since - only thing wrong with mine was this tiny little part called the rectifier, cost me a fraction of the new cost.

John, you only bought the car last week. Where did you buy it from? Private sale - grin & bear it but if it was from garage (whether Vx or not) surely you should have a good case for throwing it back at them. Regardless of warranty a company surely has a responsibility to sell goods that are "fit for purpose" and a a duff alternator within a week (in my mind) falls into that category.

Even if it was a private sale I'd be tempted to go back to the seller, complain politely & see if you can get at least some of the money back to get a new alternator.

Whereabouts in scotland are you? There is a place in cambuslang that will re-con your existing one for a fraction of the cost i used to work in a VW dealership that used them.

Euro alternators in cambuslang a quick google search and you will get there contact details
