    Post Max MPG Competition

Instead of melting our tyres and trying to use more fuel than the USA, hows about a nice friendly (and slow) competition to see who can get the most mileage. To be fair, both petrols and diesel but we'll also compare miles per pound! That might shorten the gap.

    Here's how we play:

    1) fill your tank to the brim (wipe of any spillage)
    2) reset the odometer before you move off
    3) use about half a tank
    4) refill the tank to the brim (you spilt a bit again didn't you)
    5) divide miles on odometer by litres, times by 4.546 (gallons) and post here
    6) also divide the miles per litre by your local cost per litre and post that.

I filled mine up today so the chequered flag is down, first one to the finish looses!

The more miles you do the more accurate the calculation will be, I get through alot of fuel, which is why I said half a tank (less than a week for me, espechially in the holidays).

It won't matter how many miles you do though, as you'll be posting in the same format (mpg, mp£) so they will all corispond.

On my trip up to Courtaneys and back (loads of roadworks), slightly less than I used to get but due to fuel prices around here it's not bad on the wallet

    MPG / fuel £ / MP£

    48 / 0.939 / 11.24

I averaged 46 to the gallon over 3156 miles this time last year when I went to Portugal. On that trip I did Bordeaux to Madrid in just over 6 1/2 hrs, so I wasn't exactly hanging around. Luckily Sharon was asleep most of that leg!!!

I was hoping for a running table, guess people really are more interested in melting tyres... My ideas suck...

I think you are going wrong here somewhere Nut, are you relying on the comp to work it out for you? have you changed wheel sizes?

I have always done tests on all my cars by the method you suggest, so far with my 2.0 DTi I'm getting 33-35 in town.

This week I've had to take the kids out, so the car has had normal use on M-Ways, driven at 65-70 mph on cruise I averaged at best on the comp 47.4 and this was all uninterupted motoring, yet you claim a better figure stuck in traffic due to roadworks, please post the pictures of your dash comp figures so I can see if you are telling the truth or not thx U.
