    Arrow Which Tuning Box?

I've had a browse around the forum and have decided to up the power of my 06 SRI CDTI.

I initially thought about a remap which I presume includes a chip and had a look on the superchips site.

Having browsed the forum for other potential tuning ideas I've noticed alot of people talking Tuning Boxes?

It appears these little beauties can be self fitted and removed as and when you want to.

Can someone please perhaps answer some of the following...

    1. Can you really fit them yourself and how easy is it to do?

    2. Will it knacker the engine?

    3. What sort of power gains can I expect?

    4. Which is the most poular/best unit to go for?

    5. What sort of money should I be paying?

    Many thanks in advance...

    1. yes they can be fitted easy takes about 5 min maybe quicker.
    2. personally i don't think they affect the engines reliability (some will say it does) but i have one.
    3. power gains can be up to about 50bhp more on the 150 cdti and good increase in torque.
    4. not sure about all the units but i have a DTUK one and haven't heard much about these going wrong cost me £220 new on ebay best offer direct from DTUK.
    5.prices can range from £50-£500ish

Any sort of power increase will affect any engines future reliabilty.More power and torque equals more heat and stress. That's a fact and one that's difficult to hide.

A good number of tuning box and remap companies will tell you in their PR blurbs that their product does not go beyond the 'safe' boundaries of the cars engine etc.How do they know,do they test them on every single car ?

GM would say that the 'safe' maximum torque input for its M32 gearbox is unsurprisingly 320Nm,but still you can happily buy a tuning box or remap for your 1.9 cdti 150 Astra that takes it way beyond that.

And what is the safe maximum HP pump (2 grands worth) pressure in a facelift V6 cdti I wonder.LOL

    Happy tuning!

I think its all been said above, but don't forget the little Caterman boxes for a massive power hike for little money (around 45bhp for £80) and 60 seconds to fit !!!!

As for reliability its upto you, some will say it will kill it, some will say it won't - I personally have used tuning boxes on many diesel cars over the years and never had a problem and loved the increase in power.

One thing I will say, don't fall for the increased mpg blurb, not a chance, in normal driving your car won't be any different in consumption, but clog it and will use quite a bit more, it has to really, no other way of getting more power

Remap does not have to be a replacement chip. I have a BSR remap and they provide an interface unit that flashes the programmable memory within the chip therefore no need to replace it. I think most remaps are like this these days.
