Now I've not dabbled with the wireless networks away from home - I see Maccy Dees and a number of pubs seem to be open access - is this right? Just turn up and search - then you are connected?

Have a drive around your local areas peeps and look for a white cross drawn on a house, fence or garden wall in chalk. This is where you will find an open wireless connection.

Hackers and other unscrupulous people use these connections.

Or, if you have a wirelss connection and are always seeing cars parked just down the street from your house with people in it, check your encryption. . I had to go around to me neighbours house and sort his encryption out as my laptop picked up his connection with no problems what so ever.

I live in an area of old people - mention Wireless to them and they think I'm talking about the World Service and You and Yours on Radio 4. Not seen these white crosses on houses but did read a newspaper report saying burglers are using a similar system on buildings - a white cross would indicate - recently burgled.

That's freaky, I hadn't heard about that! Luckily I don't use a wireless connection... I'll be looking out for white crosses now...

Public wireless connections are more common now. Our dealership has it installed in the service department so people can use laptops while their car is being serviced... pretty funky idea.

Yeah, it's been around for a long, long time m8. There are soooo many people that don't have any sort of encryption/access control set on their wireless routers/networks. They just leave them in the default 'totally open' state. I've come across open wireless networks all the time, and if people haven't had any sort of firewall software I've even seen their hard drives pop up on the network!!

I can connect to some ones wireless upstairs in my house. No idea whos it is.
My opinion is, I they leave it unprotecgted, then others will use their bandwidth. As long as folks are just using it for that, then there's no harm done. Probably not even notice it.

I've just setup a Hot Spot at work near our reception suite. We're now allowing visiting salesmen and customers to logon with their own equipment to check their mail etc. It's definately the future that's for sure.

My neighbour is on NTL, and his wireless is open to the world. Handy when my ADSL is down, or when I'mp laying online games and don't want my latency to go to pot with the downloads.

    nice one....

This 'white cross' was a big issue for commercial locations around london when Wireless went mainstream.

Geezers with wireless laptops were logging onto networks all over london. really scary time.....
