    Default eMachine Restore Disc

I'm currently having problems with the computer, and PC world have said that a destructive restore is the best solution. Problem being since we moved house i can't find the restore discs. The computer is an eMachine 8210. If anyone has some discs i can borrow and then send back, or any other suggestions, i would be really grateful, as this is really annoying me now, and stopping me doing what i need to do.

Obviously i will pay for any postage etc, so if anyone can help, let me know.

    Cheers.

I take it you still have your cd key to enter.

It should be on the back of the pc casing.

I have a e-machines 220 recovery disk which should work as all the disk does is reformats xp back on to your hard drive, might be worth finding out if it will work first though bud.

Might find that the restore disc has specific drivers for the hardware for each model.

Get round that by downloading the latest drivers for the hardware and burning to a disc ready to load on after windows install.

Did you try using 'System Restore' first? Often cures most windows problems if you can identify when things started to go wrong and find a restore point before this.

Wrote a guide to using System Restore on my help forum a while back, which may help, find it here:

Without wishing to upset you, restore discs are rubbish, after a certain time the only solution is to format and fresh install the lot, it's a bit like a car that has had the electrics played with, by the time you get it you are in a maze of other fixes etc, try DABs.com for a full windows disc, or take a chance by other methods, now i come to think of it, if you can prove to Microsoft its a genuine copy I'm sure they will send you another disc or d'l it to you.

Microsoft will not send you a new copy of XP. The software installed on the PC is there until you break it or change the MB or HD. Like Spikey says the restore disk contains drivers etc that are most likely out of date by now.

I would recommend buying a copy from CCL online - not far from you Pendo for £60 or even try a file sharing site such as emule. So long as you have a license (which you do) downloading a copy from there wont infringe copyright etc.

Ian, you reccomend i buy another copy of windows xp? Will this sort out the problems i'm having? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to computers, i can find my way around one no probs, but any more than that and i'm stumped. Will a new version of XP completely overide my system?

If you have a Certificate sticker on your PC you can buy the Windows XP Media CD for around £20. PM me if you need the number for someone to get this. Fully legal.

If you look over your computer case it will be stuck on there.

E-Machines are a bunch of idiots. I have a M5116 laptop and it is brilliant! But I had to format the other day. Lost the CD, went to E-Machines website to download the drivers and they don't put them online. Arrrrrrrrrrgh!! Finally got it working but it was a right chew.
