Default Clattering followed by temperature rise on 2.2DTi.....

Talk about bad luck! Supposed to be collecting a new car this weekend and p/exchanging my vectra sri 2.2dti 53 plate. Drove there Monday this week to sign papers. Left and upon starting up my vectra there was a loud clattering noise, really awful! Quickly turned off engine, tried again.. same. Of course I was outside the showroom and didnt want to attract too much attention, managed to reverse out and drive off slowly... slowly the clattering seemed to diminish and car drove ok.

Soon noticed the temperature gauge slowly rising, then for a short moment the alternator light came on and went off. Pulled over and allowed to cool off, couldnt see anything abnormal in engine bay.

Drove to nearest garage and left it there for them to look at. That was Monday! Hoping they can sort it by weekend, they are still waiting for a thermostat though no idea as I'm sure its more than that.

My guess is something maybe to do with water pump... any ideas???

    Thanks
    Simon

Sounds like lower belt pulley sheared off? drives the alternator and not sure if it drives water pump on the dti's too?

It only had a service 2-3 days before in the same dealer, so hoping its not the oil! The clattering noise sounded like a chain, maybe there is a separate one that drives the water pump or oil pump? The suggestion of the pulley sounds plausible, especially if its no longer driving the pump.
