confused Cam Chains - How long do they last?

I have a 2008 Vec 1.8 vvt Design. one of the reasons i bought this one is because it has chain-driven cams instead of belts. Great, never need changing, i thought. I was surprised to read in this Forum of the number of people changing their cam chains, some as low as 40k miles.

I have owned 4 Mercedes all with cam chains and there is no need to change these at all, (unless it actually rattles, of course). One of my cars had done 197k miles when i sold it with nothing but routine maintenance to the engine.

Do the cam chains really need changing in Vauxhalls or are people being too cautious? Has anyone actually had a chain snap? (i know some earlier engines had a problem with the oil supply pipe to the cam chain being too small).

Yeah, I thought the 1.8 had a belt? The 2.2 has problems due to a not having the improved oil jet right? Which the 2.0T etc have?

I was also thinking the camchain is meant to live the life of the engine and if its going to go it normally gives you a warning - Rattle at idle etc.

Oops, shame it's a belt. Who told you it was a chain?

Some very early 2.2 had chains snap early, and the old 2.0DTi and 2.2DTi have chains that can give trouble after 100k (usually the tensoner wears out).
